I know that I have let this site go without any improvement (although promising new and cool features for a while), but I am back to working on this and other personal sites of mine. I hope to have a new site unveiled in a few weeks - check back every once in a while for more stuff!
I wanted to comment on this, but, as usual, I have gotten way behind on my blog. I came across this article which does a analysis of the new ad by the McCain campaign with the supposed former Hillary Clinton supporter and delegate from WI. It is worth the read: I hope to be able to catch up soon.
My name is Dan Kaufman and I fought in Iraq from 2004 – 2005. I was in Fox Co, 2nd BTN, 24th Marines, 4th Marine division. I could stand up here and tell you my perspective of what is going on in Iraq, or why we shouldn’t be there, but we have all seen the news. We have heard the lies and seen them uncovered. We have seen betrayal with no one held accountable and we have all seen the destruction and devastation of Iraq; however, I feel it is more important to discuss what is going on in this country, or should I say TO this country.
I stand here before you, not as a Democrat, or Republican, not as a Liberal or a Conservative, but as an American. I stand here as an American that loves what the United States stands for, and the ideas that made her great. I signed up for the Marine Corps to protect her from enemies, foreign and domestic. Our country has made mistakes in the past, and we have worked together to fix them. I re-signed to go to Iraq because we couldn’t undo the invasion and I thought I could help make a difference. I could be part of the solution. I was wrong. I heard our Country’s call to service, but I misinterpreted it. She does not need me to stand on the front lines as a Marine, she needs me to stand up within our borders as a citizen. She needs us, as Americans, to put her on the right path. If we fail, then the ideals, principles, and foundation of this country will fade, and the American Dream will become the American Myth, a legend of what we used to be, a shadow of what we could have been. That would be the greatest injury we could do to those that we are here to honor today.
While our backs were turned, the noble United States of America was replaced with the “homeland”. The homeland is a place where “homeland security” trumps justice and morality. Freedom takes a back seat to fear. The government wraps themselves in the flag, drenched in the blood of the truly patriotic, to justify the unjustifiable. The problem with defense, as stated by Dwight D. Eisenhower is “how far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without?” How far can you go before you become the very thing you fear? This is not my country! My country does not sell out its covert agents or spy on its own citizens. My country does not break treaties and fund mercenaries. My country does not torture!
Justice and morality gives us our strength. Right makes might. Just as fear and bullying weakens us. As former President and General Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “I would rather try to persuade a man to go along, because once I have persuaded him, he will stick. If I scare him, he will stay just as long as he is scared, and then he is gone”. That is the very definition of leadership. I want the United States to be a leader in the world, a shining light, and a great example, but I feel like I am failing. I hear the cry of my Country, begging for its citizens to show her the right path, but I am busy. I can’t participate this week, or that week because I have plans. It’s a friend’s birthday party, or a wedding, or a Memorial Day cookout, or I just need a break. I will write my senator or congressman tomorrow, I have some work to get done. I can’t come to the aid of my country because I am trying to get by or pay bills. These are all excuses that I use. As one day turns into the next, the American Idea begins to fade. Each day we add more to the list we have to honor on Memorial Day. I am working to improve, and to put the excuses aside; if I can’t make the time or put in the effort, how can I expect others. Just as our country should be doing, I need to lead, and hope that others follow. Even though I know this, today will turn into tomorrow, I just hope I have to strength to rise up to the call. I am glad there are plenty of people, like those from Veteran’s For Peace that work tirelessly on my behalf and work so that everyone can hear the pleas of our great nation.
“In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.”
-- John McCrae, 1915
I found this video and found it very insightful.
Generation Chickenhawk: the Unauthorized College Republican Convention Tour
It is nice to know that only the people that don't have anything better to do with their lives are serving so these guys don't have to. I mean, I wasn't doing anything useful when I put my life and career in danger and on hold and re-signed to "fight them over there so [the College Republicans] don't have to fight".
Before I get started, I want to make it clear - I plan to support either Democratic candidate when they win the primary. That being said, I have to say that the longer this primary season goes on, the more I am confident in my decision for Barack Obama.
What is the benefit of experience? It is the wisdom gained from those experiences - the lessons learned not just the fact of having the experience. If you touch a hot oven and get burned, that experience does not mean anything unless you learn not to touch a hot oven again. If you get burned every time you pass the oven, your experiences don't mean anything - you have not gained any wisdom.
Hillary Clinton is making experience a corner stone of her campaign. Never mind the fact that her experience is as First Lady of Arkansas and First Lady in the Whitehouse. I am a computer programmer, but I can guarantee that my wife can not create any type of computer program. That being said, even if I take Hillary at her word and consider all of her First Lady time as genuine relevant experience, I have a few questions:
Where was the wisdom from her experience when we needed it most?
Where was her wisdom when the Patriot Act was going through congress?
Where was her wisdom when congress was authorizing the use of force in Iraq?
Where was her wisdom when the FISA legislation was being modified and our rights compromised.
She insists that those decisions were the best given the intelligence they had at the time. I have a problem with that. Why did other She is unwilling to take any responsibility for her actions and therefore has not learned anything from those experiences. 23 Senators and 133 Representatives made the correct decisions. They decided to look beyond the obviously whitewashed justifications. What she is telling me is that when a similar situation arises in the future arises, she will make the same mistakes.
We saw a repetition of the same mistakes when she voted to classify a section of Iran's military as a terrorist organization. Doing this essentially gives the President authorization to attack that group (inciting Iran into war). Luckily he has not acted.
If Hillary Clinton wants to run I experience, fine, let's just be clear on what we want. We want wisdom over experience. Making mistakes is natural, but if you don't learn anything from those mistakes, they mean nothing just as the experience means nothing.
You can't learn from you mistakes if you refuse to admit that you made one.
I saw this on a blog I frequent and found it very informative. I felt it was worth re-posting here:
The surge is not working and John McCain, George W. Bush and Joe Lieberman are blatantly lying through their teeth on this. Despite what right-wing blogs are saying, and despite what conservative observers are noting, the plunge in violence is actually the result of an Iraqi political decision made by and implemented by Iraqis, and the drop has little to do with the “surge,” an infusion of 30,000 troops (which wouldn’t fill a Major League stadium) into Baghdad, a city of six million people.
What’s happening is really simple and it’s happening in plain sight. But it just so happens that these two Kool-Aid drinking fools refuse to connect the dots. When someone tells you that the “surge” is working, “enlighten” them with the following facts: In July, 2007, which was America’s bloodiest summer in Iraq, attacks on American-led forces using a lethal type of roadside bomb said to be supplied by Iran reached a new high, according to the American military.
The devices, known as explosively formed penetrators, were used to carry out 99 attacks in July and accounted for a third of the combat deaths suffered by the American-led forces, according to American military officials. Such bombs, which fire a semi-molten copper slug that can penetrate the armor on a Humvee and are among the deadliest weapons used against American forces, are used almost exclusively by Shiite militants.
These Shiite militants are members of Muqtada al-Sadr’s Mehdi Army. As seen this past summer, Muqtada’s fighters shredding American forces - like ducks in a shooting gallery - despite the troop increase which began earlier in the year. This was during a summer in which we were bombarded with news of Iranian/Shia efforts to kill Americans and destabilize the Iraqi government. Then, without warning, Muqtada al-Sadr announced that he had ordered his militia to suspend offensive operations for six months (i.e.: stand down). And no one saw this coming. When this news was reported on August 30th, no one really believed it, much less expected the implementation of an actual cease-fire on the part of Iraq’s Shia fighters.
On September 1st, even the U.S. military admitted that this could be an important — if not the important — development in the situation on the ground in Iraq. “A stand down of Mehdi Army operations would also be an important step in helping Iraqi authorities focus greater attention on achieving the political and economic solutions necessary for progress and less on dealing with criminal activity, sectarian violence, kidnappings, assassinations, and attacks on Iraqi and coalition forces,” the military said.
When that was said by the U.S. military on September 1st, the “surge” was never mentioned. It was all about an Iraqi decision that would succeed or fail on Iraqi actions. The U.S. military was only observing. And guess what happened? U.S. troop deaths began plummet. American deaths dropped from 84 in August, to 65 in September, to 38 in October, with only 23 deaths in December - the lowest tally for a single month in over a year and a half. Having argued for months that Iranian-supplied Shia fighters were the most serious threat to U.S. forces in Iraq, those same forces had suddenly stopped fighting. And it showed.
But rather than recognize this for what it is, John McCain, Joe Lieberman and other right-wingers continue to spin the story as if this was the result of the “surge.” McCain boldly informed students at Coastal Carolina University (SC) that the United States has had “astonishing success” in Iraq as a result of the Petreaus military strategy now in place. However, Senator McCain never mentions the fact that our greatest enemy in Iraq, the Mehdi Army, has suspended battle operations. To exacerbate the spin, our idiot-in-chief said that since the troop increase reached full strength in June, the number of roadside bombs had been cut by half. He said U.S. military deaths were at their lowest in 19 months. Again, no mention of Muqtada al-Sadr, the Mehdi Army or his decision to stand down from combat operations. Predictably, it was all about the “troop increase.”
Unfortunately, no one seems to be calling President Bush, John McCain, Joe Lieberman, or the mainstream media on this ridiculous premise that the “Petreaus strategy” should be credited with the reduction in American deaths. Additionally, no one seems to notice as with everything else in Iraq, that the Iraqis are going to do what they want; when they want. While al-Sadr suspends combat operations, there will be relative peace in Iraq. If he takes them back up, Americans will once gain die in droves.
Believe what you may, but the future of Iraq will only improve based on Iraqi decisions made in Baghdad; not in Washington, D.C. and the halls of Congress. As this situation shows, peace in Iraq solely lies in the hands of Iraqis. It cannot and will never be forced by Americans at the point of a gun. Somebody please drop a bug in McCain’s and Lieberman’s ear before they overdose on Kool-Aid.

Well, being lazy and extremely busy is not a good combination. I am part of the way done for a registration and newsletter system, but I haven't had the energy to work on it. Anyway, here is a post on one of my favorite blogs of a fellow veteran (someone who has seen more than I). Army Of Dude
Well, I have a few beers in me now; however, I was so disgusted while watching Olberman today - not because of anything Olberman said, but because I watched a clip of GW Bush give a speech about Democrats being like a "teenager with a new credit card", while standing in front of a background saying "Holding the Line on Taxes".
Who needs taxes when veterans are not getting the care they need? Who needs taxes when veterans are denied benefits or discharged with "personality disorders" instead of PTSD? Who needs taxes when veterans are forever bound to a wheelchair because they didn't get the equipment they needed, or the mine resistant vehicles that could have saved their lives?
I am so glad that the Commander In Chief's priorities are in the right place, and doesn't let little things like what is best for our country or our veterans get in the way keep taxes low.
"Never before have so few sacrificed so much for so long."
It is comforting to know that all the sacrifices are appreciated. If only we could sell more "support the troops" stickers - then all would be perfect.
I am so glad that Bill O'Reilly has time to defend us from this horrific assault on Christmas. I mean it was in danger of being exterminated. I was clued in to this important issue from here
O’Reilly is just a stupid gas bag, what bothers me is that so many more people will have an opinion and care about what this schmuck talks about rather than the destruction of the USA and the blood being spilled daily in Iraq. I am getting tired and worn out. How many people go through the day without even thinking about those who we sent to be maimed and killed? I think about Iraq most of the day EVERY DAY. I wish I had the luxury of caring about such stupidity.
Again the Democrats rolled over and confirmed Mukasey, even after highlighting his views that are contrary to the Constitution and Ideals of the USA.
I am to the point where I don\'t get angry for anything the Republicans do. Over the last 6 years, I have come to the realization that Republicans will vote with this administration regardless of the danger to this country; however, I feel betrayed.
I put my hope in a party whose leadership thinks it is better to roll over than it is to take a stand a lose. All throughout history we have seen that those who fight for what is right, even if the odds of winning are slim, are the heroes who change the world for the better. Yet, our congress seems intent on earning the accusations of being spineless cowards. I am thankful for Senators like Russ Feingold and Representatives like Tammy Baldwin; however, I am losing hope that the Congressional Democrats will unite to put up the fight that our great Country, and those who paid the ultimate price for this Country, deserves.
I came across this great quote on Think Progress in a comment on an article. I wish I had thought of it because it is brilliant.
“If we give the presidency all the power it says it needs to fight a war, what is there to stop a president from starting a war to get all the power he wants?” -- PatrioticLiberalChristian
The Mukasey issue really highlights so many problems with our government. The fact that we are trying to push the limits of what is considered torture, makes me ashamed of our once proud and noble country. Even though torture is a huge and disgraceful issue for the USA, Mukasey's real problem is his willingness to shred the constitution and protect the President as above the law.(illustrated in the quote below.)
Leahy: Can the President put someone above the law by authorizing illegal conduct?
Mukasey: If by illegal you mean contrary to a statute but within the authority of the President to defend the country, the President is not putting somebody above the law, the President is putting somebody within the law.
The logic that Feinstein and Schumer use is that the Bush administration will appoint someone worse if they do not confirm Judge Mukasey. This IS BLACKMAIL. Not only that, I would rather have Bush shown for who he is by appointing a more evil AG than give in without a fight every time Bush threatens congress.
What is even worse than giving in without a fight? Well, when there is a simple solution and they still don't fight. They are worried about a recess appointment -- I got an idea - DON'T GO ON RECESS!! God forbid the congress doesn't go on vacation to fill their campaign coffers or speak to their constituents to do what is in the best interest of our country.
Why did we vote in November? Everything that Bush has wanted in the last FULL YEAR he has got. The democrats have been in charge for 11 months now and still don't have the confidence to stand up to George Bush.
Republicans are the pedophile abusive father; however, the Democrats have become the mother that turns a blind eye and pretends there isn't a problem. THEY ARE BOTH JUST AS CULPABLE.
I am sick and tired of watching my country slide into the abyss of corruption.
I just wrote this letter to Senator Schumer and I intend to send a similar one to Dianne Feinstein. I hope I was not too harsh.
Senator Charles Schumer:
I am extremely disgusted with your vote to approve Michael Mukasey as Attorney General. I know that I am not from your state; however, your actions have further disgraced the country that I love. The country and ideals for which I am willing to lay down my life. I don't recognize the USA anymore, and am ashamed of you and Senator Dianne Feinstein.
If torture is not a serious enough issue to reject the top law enforcement official of the country, then I don't know what is.
It is quite obvious to me that you do not care for this once great nation that is now ailing from a deadly cancer within its government. That cancer is not the diseased republicans that continue to usurp power and promote war, it is a cancer of Democrats like you and Dianne that fail to act as the immune system to fight, and defeat this sickness. Without our immune system we are doomed.
If you have problems figuring out how to vote to uphold the ideals of this Great Nation, please consult with the Honorable Russ Feingold. He is a true patriot that truly believes in his country and doing the right thing. Since your moral compass is obviously broken, please refer to a Senator with a stellar compass and a mountain of courage.
If you are trying to figure out why congressional approval is so low, please look at actions like these for clarification.
A disgusted citizen and patriot:

What if we could take money out of politics?
What if our politicians weren't making policy from the pockets of greed?
What if we the people had a voice?
What if our leaders that send our brave men and women in uniform to die acted for the best interest of our country, and not their best interest?
What if the Congress was more concerned with solving problems than how they are perceived?
What if we talked to countries we didn't like?
What if we did not allow companies to bypass our labor laws?
What if we saw people as people and not Muslim, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Blue, Green, etc...?
Where have our Patriots gone that believe in protecting the ideals the American Flag stands for rather than preserving its cloth?
I have a dream for a better world, but it fades as reality keeps me weary and restless! The harder I grasp for it, the quicker it fades.
1. GET OUT OF IRAQ.
There is no guarantee that the US intervention into the affairs of Iraq will help solve their problem. In fact, the evidence seems to be mounting to the contrary. Four to six of our brave Soldiers, Airmen, Navy, and Marines are being slaughtered on a daily basis.. Not to mention the scores of Iraqis dead every day - only adding to our problem. We are creating more enemies. We are LESS secure. We have weakened our military to the point where we would be unable to handle an additional REAL threat to our country properly. Also, we are holding the Iraqis back from any real progress of fixing their country. We are \"muddying\" the waters, so to speak, and confusing the real issues. The Iraqis are not going to be able to address their real issues while the US is continually distracting them from their real issues. Besides that, they do not want us there. That in itself is good enough reason to leave. We supposedly gave them freedom and liberty, let\'s not be the hypocrites that don\'t respect their voice when they express it.
2. Publically funded elections.
Normally, this would be one of those \"minor\" issues that I would include as bonus issues after the main problems were dealt with; however, when our politicians no longer represent the people or the best interests of this country, none of the necessary legislation or problems can be solved. A perfect example is the Webb amendment. EVERY Senator should have voted for it; however, because many of our Senators are loyal to party before country, it could not get the super majority to end the debate.
3. Use our leverage as THE major world consumer.
Create taxes on ANY good or service that violates US labor laws. If any part in the production of ANY good is produced in an environment violates the US labor laws, then the company and/or product would be heavily taxed. Since we can not control or enforce other countries\' labor policies, we can ensure that US companies\' that want to abided by our excepted labor standards are not at a disadvantage. This would have SWEEPING positive effects, not only for the US, but for the whole world. Just think, it would not be beneficial for American companies to produce good and move factories to third world countries. Other countries would be forced to improve their conditions in order to compete in our market. Jobs would be created in the US. We would create more of our own products. We would create more wealth that would stay in the US. The United states would be restored as a leader in human rights and an example to the rest of the world. Yes, you may pay slightly more for goods and services; however, you would have more jobs, better paying jobs, an extremely increased tax revenue, our gross national product (GDP) would skyrocket as we wouldn\'t be exporting our raw materials to be processed elsewhere, and we can start \"practicing what we preach\". We would lead by example, not \"do what I say not what I do\".
3. Heavily penalize companies that hire illegal and undocumented workers.
Let\'s stop criminalizing the workers who are looking for a better life. They would not be pouring into this country if they knew they could not get a job. This may look just like an immigration issue, but it is also an economic issue related to the above step. The jobs these undocumented workers are doing would be available for US citizens. That also means that these jobs would be required to live up to the US labor standards and would not be \"jobs no American would do\". It would also cost considerably less than a giant wall or fence and the necessary personnel to patrol it. Let\'s face it, if you were faced with the choice of letting your family starve, or sneaking into the United States to feed your family, what would you choose? No matter how big the fence is, no matter how many people patrol the border, desperate people will try to get in if they can get work. Let\'s stop attacking the symptoms and go for the cause. It is like beating your head against the wall and bandaging the wound every time - it is much simpler to just stop banging your head against the wall.
This is not an end all/fix all, but it addresses some of our major problems in our country. When we fix these, we can the begin to address the more complex issues as well as discuss the best way to tweak the ones we already implemented. Doing nothing, although it seems to be popular and easy in Congress, is not an option. If we wish the United States to be great because of its actions, not just because \"we say it is or we will kick your butt\", then we must begin taking the high road and lead by example, not by the business end of a sword.
I had to respond to a blogger who posted this on a Blog I regularly visit:
Every great soldier has to love the fight, they have to believe the fight to be a hell of a hoot.
Here was my response:
What about those of us who join to be a hero? Those that love to fight for RIGHT not just to fight. Those that would be just as happy if no one wanted to fight because they knew we would come to help not to further our own agenda.
I will not characterize all the troops or pretend that I speak for each and every one; however, they do a great job fighting at the behest of the country they trust and believe in. They hope that their beloved country would not abuse their trust. Individual troops do not have the luxury of challenging the overall foreign policy of the United States. If they are given a mission to secure in area, they will secure it. That is why it is up to EVERY CITIZEN to ensure that our military is not misused or abused - when it is, it is our DUTY to our troops as well as our country to correct these transgressions against our military as well as other countries.
You are only the good guy if you ACT like the good guy. Power is not the same as righteousness.
I get a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes every day. I look at the country I would gladly give my life for - dying of cancers that are not only growing, but metastasizing to all areas of government and society. I don't know where it started, but it has infected the information outlets, our justice system, all three branches of government, and the general public.
The cancers are all different with the same result. Some have a cancerous pride that forbids them to admit any mistakes. Some have a cancerous lust for power which keeps them grabbing for power regardless of the consequences. Some are riddled with cancerous selfishness that prevents them from caring for their fellow man. Each one of these cancers is abusing one systemic cancer of our society... FEAR. Those that have the power to excise the cancer from our great country are paralyzed by fear.
Many people feed the cancers of this country because they are scared that we may be destroyed - to them I say we are already being destroyed even if we survive with our lives.
Many others who see this cancer are scared of losing. They fear that by taking a stand, by telling the unvarnished truth and defending the obvious, they will be seen as weak or ridiculous. They are afraid of letting the other cancers win - which, inevitably will be a self fulfilling prophecy. They consistently calculate how to persuade those "on the fence" and which stances are most popular. To them I say - do what is right for this country, regardless of how you think it would be perceived, you may be surprised.
I am losing my energy and hope - the harder I cling to it the faster it slips through my fingers. I will keep fighting - the stakes are too high. I guess I will have to dig deeper and find more energy to do more.
It doesn’t matter how many facts we have, the war mongerers will believe what they want. This administration forces out anyone of the top brass that does not give them the answers they want. Before I am accused of only looking at the information that agrees with me, let’s review:
1. Major General John Batiste
- Said Rumsfeld threatened to fire anyone who discussed conflicting views
- Retired to speak out against the occupation
- WSJ would not post insight from a TWO STAR general on the occupation
2. General Eric Shinseki - (4 star general for the military illiterate)
- suggested several hundred thousand troops necessary if we invaded Iraq
- ignored pre-invasion
3. LT. General Gregory Newbold - (3 stars)
- Retired in 2002 openly criticizing Donal Rumsfeld’s plans fro invation
- Retired in protest
- suggested 500,000 troops necesary
- Wrote a very insightful TIME article “Why Iraq was a mistake”
4. Lt General Anthony Zinni
- Says it was a mistake to support Bush in 2000
- Supported Jim Webb in last election
- Presented plan about what was necessary to invade Iraq - was ignored
- Outlined 10 majore criticisms of the Iraq Invasion in May of 2004
5. Many retired Generals (8 I believe) wrote an open letter to the President about their concern about torture policy.
There are more, I am sure, but I don’t have them all here. This is UNPRECIDENTED. Never before in the history of our country have so many of the TOP military spoken out against an administration. Although I will listen to the Patraeus report and weigh it on its merits, I have low expectations, because anyone being honest or saying what the administration does not want to hear is forced out or marginalized.
Let’s not forget that these Generals were traditionally Republican - not to mention they have great combined combat experience. You can not accuse these men of “hating America” or “wanting the US to fail”. When will people wake up?
I get so disheartened when I see the ignorant posts on a few of the blogs I monitor. No facts or figures, or new information to help me see WHY this "war" makes sense. Nothing but forecasts that the bogeyman will come out of the shadows and kill all Americans. I try to have a reasonable debate and I get called a coward, defeatist, surrender monkey - take your pick.
First of all, I still don’t understand how someone could think that the country they love is under such a threat. That even their FAMILY is imminently threatened by these “Islamofascists” and not join the fight against them. The military is stretched to the breaking point - there is no debate about that; and yet healthy military aged men and women who justify this occupation on the basis of the great threat will not fight to help us win. I don’t understand. I have said it before, I can only see 3 reasons for this:
1. You don’t think this country is worth fighting for:
- In which case your opinion about the welfare and course
of action is irrelevant since you are not invested enough
to make the effort to make an informed decision.
2. You don’t truly believe what you are saying.
3. You are a coward who’s opinions are irrelevant because you are making your judgements irrationally based on fear.
I hear excuse after excuse, and every day I am bothered by the majority of people that go about their day as if nothing is happening. No one in this country is asked to sacrifice. The people supporting this occupation are not even willing to discuss a draft to get the military the bodies to fill the ranks that the military needs. Hell, they aren’t even willing to raise taxes to pay for it. However, they are willing to cut veterans benefits and give these patriots substandard care.
I am willing to listen to good arguments, but I haven’t heard any. At least none based in any fact. Do people actually think that I want our country to fail? Do people actually think I like seeing flag draped coffins? I know the lies are easier to swallow because we ALL would like them to be true - but they are not. The truth hurts - but the longer we ignore it, the more pain it will bring.
"People who are willing to sacrifice essential freedoms for security deserve neither freedom nor security." --Benjamin Franklin -- And that is probably exactly what we will get!
It isn't JUST in the ability to spy on American citizens (which is bad enough), but coupled with the ability to declare ANYBODY and enemy combatant or terrorist, they can monitor your communications, take them out of context, try you in a military tribunal (with no habeas corpus) or even the right to hear the evidence against you to explain your intent, and finally put you into Gitmo. Since all this is done in secrecy, they could skip all the tedious framing and simply take anyone they don't like and put them into Gitmo - all they have to do is CLAIM that they did all the above.
Now, that may not bother you because you "are not doing anything wrong". However, by the time they do come for you, the rest of us that are speaking up to preserve our rights will already be in Gitmo (or some black ops prison somewhere). There will be no one there to fight for YOU. Do you really think that Hitler or any other dictator got power and support of their people by announcing that they are violating your rights? The answer is no. They did it quietly while they cranked up the fear meter to keep people from questioning authority. "All we have to fear is fear itself" is exactly what is happening. Keeping people afraid keeps them from being rational.
This is truly scary. Our country is being usurped quietly under our noses while everyone turns away saying "well, it doesn't affect me." WHEN IT DOES AFFECT YOU -- IT IS TOO LATE! Ask someone from a concentration camp if, during the rise of Hitler, they ever thought they could be put into a concentration camp for no reason.
Barack Obama took a “tough on terror” stance in a speech last week where he laid out how he would handle the “War on Terror”. While I did agree with much of what he said as well as the indictments against the Bush administration, I believe his comments regarding Pakistan were reckless and borderline dangerous.
“If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won\'t act, we will.” He also added that he would be willing to insert US ground troops for the mission. The US could easily have gotten away with surgical strikes and military actions in the remote regions of Pakistan prior to the Iraq quagmire; however, since 2003, the world’s view of the US has flipped. We are now seen as the BIGGEST threat to world peace. We do not have the credibility to invade countries without the permission of that country. Since every other country sees us as a large threat, how many times are they going to let us invade sovereign countries before they start wondering if they are on the list? How long before countries, even our allies, unify against us out of fear that we might target them next?
If that doesn’t scare you, just think how the US would react if a foreign country sent military troops into the US to get people that have committed “terrorist” acts in their country. It would probably start a war. You can only be the bully so long until everyone else gets sick of it and does something about it.
Let’s restore this country to a Leader, not an aggressor. Let’s lead by example instead of telling the rest of the world “do as I say, not as I do.” Let’s return HONOR and INTEGRITY to the United States of America. Let’s revive our founding principles!
Quote from a concerned officer:
With the fear meter being cranked back up toward red and Bush assigning himself more and more power the question is raised; what are we to do? When one looks at the big picture of all that he and his cronies do it paints a frightening picture of the future. Taken alone his firing of justice dept lawyers, wiretaps, endless imprisonment of his own creation, the "enemy combatant" (including US citizens), firing top military officials who disagree with him, his use of executive privileged, signing statements, and executive orders giving him emergency powers all are abuses of powers or violations of law. What should be especially worrisome is what all this points to when looked at as a whole. People are so distracted by each ensuing scandal that they are not connecting the dots. What I am seeing is an emerging picture of a carefully orchestrated power grab. Some may call me paranoid, but I don't think so. Maybe it will never happen, but as a student of history and political science I don\'t think it is too far off base to think that this is the direction the signs are pointing.
All of this again begs the question; if it does happen what do we do? Bush has disarmed, so to speak, some of those who are traditionally the most suspicious of government. The staunch supporters of the 2nd amendment are right to fear government, but for some reason a lot of them seem to be the ones who still support Bush. I think that part of this is due to the fact that he has done nothing to restrict gun ownership. They are under the illusion that as long as they have that one right they will be able to protect their freedom. This ignores the fact that without the right to free speech, privacy, and against unreasonable search and seizure we will be unable to organize any real resistance. That leaves a lot of people operating on their own, which although annoying, would not pose any real threat to a tyrannical govt. I think they also picture all 70 million (or whatever the number is) gun owners rising up against tyranny, but is this realistic? Hardly. Trying to get people to lay anything on the line or become passionate about anything is next to impossible. When your only right is gun ownership how do you protect that right? An oppressive govt will gladly pry your gun out of your cold dead hands and you will be lucky if you can take even one of them with you since everything will be in their favor.
How do you rally people to action in this day of apathy? People say they are disgusted but about the most you can hope for is a bumper sitcker or a posting online saying so. How long will that be an option once it is learned that the terrorists are communicating via online forums and they need to be shut down to protect your safety? With the constant monitoring of all things electronic I have no doubt that the most passionate supporters of freedom are already being watched. Since they can be held forever without trial or even being identified as being in custody they can be silenced forever.
The military really is the guardian of freedom. Anything else will only unseat those in power if they give it up willingly. It has already been shown that any form of resolution by any other part of govt can be ignored if the exec so chooses. Impeach? Pardon yourself or refuse to do as they say claiming exec privilege or national security. Unconstitutional? Not a problem, just ignore it or come up with your own bizarre interpretation. One can only hope that it will not come to that or if it does that everyone in uniform will remember what it is that we swore to protect. There is a reason that our founders did not have the military swear an oath of loyalty to the President; we should not have loyalty to an individual or an office but to an ideal upon which our country was founded. The start of all great tyrannical leaders came when that was forgotten. America is not a place, it is an ideal and despite fighting off any invasion and dominating the rest of the world militarily America could still be lost.
But again, what can I do about it? If I were a General or even a Col in the right position there would be a lot I could do but I am just an officer in the reserves. How do I even become relevant or make myself be heard?
When asked what success means in Iraq, after stating "Democrats will all be backtracking when we win in Iraq", a Bush apologist I was debating with said this:
Oh… You actually have a definition of success in Iraq? Something other than withdrawal?Well, I am doing my best not to explode - here is my response.
I will tell you what success in Iraq means. It mean preventing the destruction of our own country from within. The Bush admin is using this to create fear, with that fear, they have broken down and deteriorated the constitutional protections and balance of power.
They continue to spread the rhetoric - “We need to stay in Iraq because we are making progress” - and - “We need to stay in Iraq because it is getting worse and that shows the threat”. Two mutually exclusive arguments and I have heard them used in the same interviews.
As for the coalition forces, it is nothing more than lip service, just like this administration’s “support the troops” rhetoric. When we attacked Iraq, the UN Security council only had 3 out of 15 members that were willing to back US military action on the basis of resolution 1441 (that had passed unanimously in 2001).
I am sick of seeing my country destroyed - that is what is ruining my life. We can point out all the lies, the deception, the death and destruction and each time someone has the nerve to come back and say “oh we will win” or this is necessary, but can’t show me any facts, figures, statistics - or even provide a realistic scenario of how we would win or what it would look like. In fact, they aren’t even willing to put their butt where there mouth is and HELP in this great cause. They sit behind their computers with poms poms yelling “Go USA. I support my troops because I have a yellow sticker on my car. GOOOOOO TEAM”.
For the sake of argument, let’s say I find a genie in a bottle and I wish the Iraq war ends tomorrow and the Iraqis can get along - what have we won? We have racked up a debt that will haunt this country for decades (even centuries) to come. We have lost friends, sons, daughters, mothers, and fathers. Al Qaeda will still be stronger than it was in 2001. The Taliban is still stronger than ever after being almost eliminated. And our rights have been stripped away and I don’t recognize the USA anymore. The world will still hate us and more people will probably want to harm it. The military is still stressed and severely weakened and we will have 10s of thousands if not more, wounded and suffering troops that our country is unwilling to pay for because it would mean more taxes - and heaven forbid we raise taxes and ask the American people sacrifice for such an essential cause during a time of war. The solution is to “go to the mall”.
I have some questions. How bad does it have to get before you change your mind? What rights will you miss when they are stripped away? Who will fight for you when they have disposed of all of us that are fighting to preserve this country?
We don't need the "terrorists" to terrorize America anymore. We have our own elected officials doing it for them. They continue to spew the common talking points even though our intelligence agencies say that "following us home" is highly unlikely.
Common sense and logic clearly shows this assumption to, not only be false, but rediculous. That is exactly the point. If they scare us enough, then we can no longer be rational. We will ignore logic and common sense and submit to our fear.
There is no practical reason why "they" don't follow us home now if they wanted to. Let me make this clear - this boogie monster has been created for only one reason, TO KEEP US IN LINE. They are not an army. There is nothing keeping them in Iraq. They can come here anytime they want. They can follow us home whether our military is entrenched in Iraq or not.
I am not saying this because I want to scare people. In fact, quite the opposite, I want people to stop making decisions based on fear. There has always been bad people doing bad things. A motivated individual can cause great harm and loss of life (you only have to look as far as Timothy McVeigh to see an example), but you can't base all your decisions on the fear that this might happen again. That is the conundrum of freedom. People are free to make bad and harmful choices. They are also free to make this world a better place. Who do we want to be?
Not a day goes by that I don't think about the future of our country. It is in grave danger, but not from terrorists, from our own government.
This administration wants you to surrender your freedoms and it uses fear as a justification.
"People who are willing to sacrifice essential freedoms for security deserve neither freedom nor security." --Benjamin Franklin
Today was a very telling day in the US Senate. Cloture (motion to end the debate so they can vote on it) was being voted on an amendment that would require that the troops spend at least as much time at their home stations as their last deployment before being deployed again.. Basically saying that they should not be in Iraq (a very stressful combat zone) for longer than they are in the United States.
Well, It makes me very sad to report that it failed - stalling the bill in a filibuster. Who voted against this amendment? The same people who say that I don't support the troops because I don't want any more of them killed. The same people who call me a traitor even though I fought in Iraq. The same people that call me a "defeatist". 40 Republicans and Joe Lieberman.
If this occupation is soooo important to our nation's security, why are the war supporters in congress asking the American people to sacrifice for the cause? Why isn't there a draft? Why are they cutting taxes when our troops are underfunded in combat and at home?
The soldier in Iraq does not care that you have a sticker on your car. He cares to see his child for the first time. She hopes that she won't miss another of her child's birthdays. He wants to spend some quality time with his family and friends before he has to be sent back to combat.
Good Job to the 41 Senators. You are certainly supporting the troops in a very unique way. I don't understand it, but what do I know about the troops?
